Drip Coffee And Donuts

When Alex Savakis takes a bite of a donut he knows pretty fast if the donut will give him indigestion. He doesn’t get nauseous, he burps up the taste of the donut for the next couple hours. Gross! A donut that inspired this piece surprised him. It came from a smaller independent donut shop. It didn’t give him the burps and it tasted better most donuts he ever had.

This animated piece is a reflection of his experiences at donut shops. On the other side of the counter where he chews on a donut, coffee is streaming from a giant filter into a round, glass pot with a plastic collar and handle. The color of the collar and handle indicate which pots hold caffeinated coffee (brown) or decaf coffee (orange).

In the past coffee was served in ceramic cup with saucer or a hearty mug and the donut came to you on a dish. If you were in a rush coffee was served in a styrofoam cup. Now, coffee comes in a paper cup and a donut is packed into a bag. Counters at big name commercial shops were eliminated. Smaller independent shops still have counters.
