This Is How I Made My First Comic With A Portrait

When I created a portrait of the owner of Lucca Ravioli, I was thinking about the time I lived in the Mission of San Francisco in the 1990s. Michael Feno was the last generation of family who founded the business to run the store. After I finished his portrait, I couldn’t let the story Lucca go. So I created my first comic about its history.

To make the comic, I had to include the portrait of Mr. Feno. I had to tap into my memory of Lucca Ravioli and the ravioli I ate for dinner. My favorite thing about Lucca Ravioli was the vintage neon sign that rested on a green, red, and white awning and the hand lettered paper signs taped to the windows.

I have many portraits of people from different eras and professions on my website. Their histories lend themselves to comics. For primary sources of information about my subjects I visit websites of historical societies, philanthropic and family foundations, and news organizations. They share correct information and data.

Let’s work together on a comic about your favorite person - alex@alexsavakis.com. It’ll be interesting and fun for both of us.
