Kringle Creator And Baker Christian Olesen

A Favorite Pastry Of President and Mamie Eisenhower

In 2024 I started a portraiture project and posted it to my Instagram. I used the prompts from the 2024 Theydrawtober challenge by They-Draw.com. I was focused on image over biography. Life experiences make a person. I included accomplishments by the people I illustrated because they shouldn’t be overlooked.

Baking The Official State Pastry

Every year Trader Joe’s brings back a pastry called the Raspberry Kringle. It’s packaged in a white paper sleeve. To actually see it you have to buy one. This year we bought it then saw it. The Kringle is a ring of dough filled with a raspberry jelly and topped with icing. We tasted it. It was good.

Turns out the Raspberry Kringle is from an actual bakery located in Racine, Wisconsin. The bakery, O&H Danish Bakery (@ohdanishbakery), was founded in 1949 by Christian Olesen (illustration).

In 1956, Dwight and Lady Mamie Eisenhower received a Kringle as a gift, proclaiming it publically as one of their favorite pastries. Kringle popularity began to soar.

Today, the third generation of Olesens keep the bakery going.

In July 2013, Kringle was signed into law as “The Official State Pastry of Wisconsin.”
