Actor Larry D. Mann
I love the old animated holiday TV specials. As a kid in the 1970s, a colorful spiraling introductory graphic with crazy drumbeats introduced this block of holiday programming. It psyched me up for awesome, amazing, mesmerizing, exciting, and unconventional TV. Since then I watched these shows almost every year. I was happy to catch an actual broadcast of the Rankin/Bass production of “Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer”. This year, I developed an appreciation for Yukon Cornelius who rescued Hermey, the dental student elf, and Rudolph from Bumbles, the abominable show monster. YC was tough as old boots with a big heart. On the other end Rudolph’s dad, Donner, was a mean SOB. And Santa was no saint.
The voice of Yukon Cornelius was Larry D. Mann. You might recall his face. He was a prolific TV actor, appearing in Get Smart, Bewitched, Gunsmoke, and Columbo. He had supporting roles in The Sting, In the Heat of the Night, and Bullitt. Chances are you saw one of his performances but couldn’t remember where.
