Art drew me into comic books

I don’t know who introduced me to comic books but I know why I never put them down: Mike Grell. He was the artist for my favorite book at the time, Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. The book is set in the 31st century when humanity colonized the solar system. Superboy would travel through time to assist the Legion to fight intergalactic foes.

Grell’s work animated the words of writer Jim Shooter. His work blew away my puny adolescent mind with dynamic body movements and facial expressions. Page layouts brought the “superheroics” to life using frames that hovered over full page action and characters breaking and reaching across panels. Thanks, Mike, for an action-packed trip to the future and my love and appreciation of comic books and graphic novels.

This is Mike Grell, artist and writer.
