Miss Phyllis’s Moment In The Moment
As a Christmas gift I received a wool knit hat. I wore it indoors on colder winter days to stay warm.
I was staying my mom during one of those winters. My mom was delicate. She was thin and smaller. She hated the cold and being cold. My mom kept her house very warm in winter. One day her house was so warm I wore a short sleeve t-shirt in her house and removed my hat. Without thinking about it I placed my hat on her massive tableware cabinet in her dining room. After, I went to kitchen where I sat with my sister to eat, or drink coffee, or chat, I don’t recall exactly.
At that time my mom was in the throes of dementia. She didn’t engage with my sister and me like she had. But on that day she had a moment of lucidity. When I casually dropped my hat my mom saw the hat. She put it on and pulled it close to her eyes then walked into the kitchen. She stood in the doorway until we noticed her. She was smiling big and kind of laughing. My sister and I burst out laughing. We got a picture of our mom in that moment. I commemorated it by drawing my mom as a hiphop artist. For a few precious minutes our mom was hanging with us. We had a great time!
